4. Choose an Outfitter

Now that you found us there's no need to look for another outfitter!

Here are a few reasons why we are tops on Kilimanjaro:

  • You book directly with the owners, not agents or intermediates. Carol handles the bookings and questions, Eben handles all safaris and Wilbert is your host in Tanzania.
  • We have our own operation in Tanzania - we're not just agents - and offer the best value for your money
  • We are experienced in all the best routes - Western Breach, Lemosho-Crater & Machame
  • We give you enough time to acclimatize - 100% summit success in 2004! Almost perfect ever since! You cannot argue with success.
  • We use the best equipment on the mountain. You will camp in large Mountain Hardwear™ Trango tents (Mt. Everest favorites). And you will sleep well on your portable mattress!
  • We provide portable toilets (to avoid the horrible public long drops) and we use CMC technology for human waste at the highest camp. Read below for more information.
  • We provide portable showers in a privacy tent.
  • Our chefs cater for vegetarians, meat-lovers and other tastes! Our very expensive Katadyn Expedition filters provide clean and tasty water!
  • We carry the best safety equipment on the mountain, including oxygen, hyperbaric bags and AEDs. AND WE KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO USE IT!
  • We care about our porters (read this) and the environment.
  • We encourage the cultural interaction between our clients and our team. We'll teach you our songs, our games, our cultures and about the mountain.
  • We climb Kilimanjaro every two weeks, unlike some big name international companies who fly their guides in a few times a year. No wonder they get into trouble on the mountain!
  • Our clients love the way we climb - please read our testimonials.
  • Once they sign up, our clients receive 40 pages of information to prepare them for the mountain - including a 20-page color booklet!
  • We talk to our guides via cell every afternoon while they are on the mountain to ensure that everything is OK.
  • We report our daily progress on Facebook and Twitter! Please fan us!
  • And the Kiliwarriors know how to have fun - just ask anyone who has seen our team in action on the mountain! We have an identity. We are the Kiliwarriors!
If you are not convinced, then please compare us to other outfitters using this checklist:

  • Do you have a published porter policy? Ours is here.
  • Do you employ the mountain team, or are your climbs contracted out? Even some of the best-known companies don't have their own mountain teams! We do.
  • Do your porters have their own tent(s) or do they sleep in the mess tent (illegal)? We have porter tents.
  • What is the maximum weight carried by each porter? Do you carry a scale on the trip? We do and our weight-limit = 20kg (45lb)
  • Do your porters pay for food and/or transportation to/from the mountain? Ours don't.
  • How much do you pay your porters & guides? Read the section about Porter Care.
  • What are the names of the guides who will lead us on the Mountain? Many outfitters will use any licensed guide - regardless of experience and language skills! Wilbert, Faraja, Gideon and Hosea lead all our climbs (unless one of them has a family emergency or ilness).
  • Did your guides attend at least a 5-day WFR safety course within the last 18 months? Every April, our guides, in collaboration with a few other outfitters in Arusha, attend a week-long WFR session with instructors from the USA
  • Do you provide oxygen and portable altitude chambers? Do you carry AEDs (to start the heart after a heart attack? We do.
  • Do you have an Environmental Policy - how do you handle garbage and human waste? (Digging holes are unacceptable) Yes, we use Clean Mountain Cans at Crater Camp. We empty our Porta-Potti holding tanks into these cans instead of digging holes.
