Senior Safaris

We don't know what the word "senior" means!  Someone older than 60? 70? 80?

Membership in the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is open to any person age 50 or above. With 25 percent of the U.S. population in the 50+ category, nearly half of all people in this age bracket are AARP members!

So we will use this definition and define a "senior" as someone of age 50 or older! This section is for you!

Introduction We are noticing a remarkable increase in the amount of seniors who participate in our Kilimanjaro treks and safaris. Many of our clients are in their sixties and some are over 70! Yet, they show incredible endurance, strength and good spirits - it is just amazing to see so many 60-year olds on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! At 19,340 ft high it is a very tough mountain to overcome yet the seniors continue to go to Africa to do something extraordinary and they are succeeding!

In this section we will discuss seniors on safari and explain why the Kiliwarriors is the company of choice for older adventurers!

Flights Flying to Africa from the Americas, the Far East and Australasia  is tough. Upgrades are heavily contested and near impossible for most part of the year. Only a few airlines fly to East Africa and their first/business class options are limited.

As a result, most of us have to bite the bullet and fly in steerage! With tourism reaching record highs most flights are full. Middle seats are now occupied and personal space is non-existent. What happened to the golden age of flying?

1. Seniors should consider overnight stops in connecting cities. Coming from the USA, consider spending a night or two in Amsterdam or London for example before continuing to Nairobi or Entebbe or Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam!

A good night's rest will soothe a stiff body and help you adapt to the East Africa time zone which is almost the same as central Europe (give and take an hour or two!)

2. Connecting flights eat luggage! We estimate that 1 out of 6 clients arrive at Kilimanjaro airport without their luggage! The luggage is not lost - just delayed - and normally arrives on the next flight which is the following night! When you overnight in Europe for example, you give your luggage time to catch up with you - which is a good thing!

Kiliwarrior safari itineraries normally include 2 nights in your arrival city in East Africa. This gives you time to settle in, wait for your luggage if needed and buy items of personal items you may have left at home - before you travel to remote safari destinations.

Group travel or not? Many of our senior clients enjoy group travel. The wives tell us their husbands will drive them crazy if it was only the two of them on safari!

An air-conditioned bus tour in Italy is a relaxing way to take in the sights.   Comfortable reclining seats with head and foot rests, curtains to block the sun, flushing toilets, ice cold drinks, soft conversations with your fellow tour mates, clear communications from your English-speaking tour guide. Itineraries are cast in stone with little opportunity for individuals to dictate matters.

Group travel in Africa is different.

Very bumpy roads, noisy vehicles, dust everywhere, hot sun, biting tsetse flies, soft-spoken guides with broken English, inconvenient bathroom stops and no air-conditioning! Itineraries can be influenced by strong personalities - if the majority in a minivan with 7 tourists decide to leave a game drive early and head back to the lodge, the minority can do nothing about it.

Tough conditions sometimes bring out the worst in people. On safari,  spending 10 days in a small vehicle with one or more unhappy strangers is not our idea of having fun.

The bathroom situation is particularly troublesome. In the African heat you must drink a lot of water to rehydrate - translating to frequent bathroom stops. The larger the group the more frequent the stops and when 7 people have to take turns behind a single bush on the Serengeti plains you are looking at 30-minute pit stops!

We suggest private safaris in intimate tented accommodations. With your own vehicle and guide you are in complete control of your safari! If you miss the company of others, our tented camps attract very interesting couples and individuals from around the world;  stimulating conversations around the camp fire often lead to lifelong friendships.

Even our single clients prefer the tented camp experience. Our guides are always around to converse with and dinner is always a group affair. Singles just blend in - this is not possible at large tourist lodges where being single can be awkward.  Read more about this in the "lodges" section below.

The Kiliwarriors have some fixed departures for those who prefer to share safaris. Our group sizes are limited to 4 persons.

Safety & health

Safaris in East Africa are conducted in remote parks with very limited communication, rescue and support facilities. A heart attack or stroke, for example, can be fatal as medical assistance will often take hours to arrive.

Senior clients must be aware of the risks and take the necessary precautions.   The Kiliwarriors offer the most advanced safety package. As the top outfitter on Kilimanjaro, we know a thing or two about emergencies and rescues under tough conditions. This knowledge and experience are much appreciated by our safari clients:

bullet

All our clients are enrolled in the Flying Doctors emergency program. They will evacuate a patient to the nearest best hospital as far away as Nairobi.

At an additional charge pf $100 per trip, we offer portable oxygen and AEDs. Automated External Defibrillators are devices that look at a person's heart rhythm (through special pads placed on the torso) and can recognize ventricular fibrillation (VF), also known as "sudden cardiac arrest" or SCA. If SCA is present, an AED will advise, and will talk the responder through some very simple steps to defibrillate. AEDs are designed to be used by lay rescuers or "first responders" such as guides and fellow passengers.

We have a first-aid kit in every vehicle.

Our clients can use our cell phones to call home or to receive calls.

Itineraries

Client beware!

East Africa has vast distances, bad roads, unreliable air services, animal migrations, changing weather patterns, and plenty of accommodation choices for all tastes.

Seniors should avoid itineraries with long stretches in the vehicle. The heat, dust and bumping will get to you. Trust us, sometimes your body will hurt from the shaking! We include air transfers where it makes sense. Internal airfares are quite affordable and convenient and will go a long way to making your safari as comfortable and enriching as it can be.

Our older clients prefer a slower pace with a minimum of 2 nights at every stop. Constant packing and unpacking is best left for backpackers who travel light!

Lodges & Camps

Large hotel chains are very popular with tour groups. They are comfortable and some are in excellent locations (Mara Serena for example).

Sopa, Serena, Sarova and others are household names in the world of African safaris. It is little wonder that these are the most requested accommodations when we first talk to potential clients.

Sometimes it makes sense to book a chain lodge. But the modern day tented camps are certainly worth a consideration!

Just for a moment, close your eyes and imagine a half circle of chairs surrounding a large camp fire. As you sit down, you are presented with your favorite beverage by a friendly waiter. Suddenly, you hear a noise! Then a roar followed by a series of muffled grunts. Lion!

The other guests arrive to join you at the fire. Everyone is silent, waiting in anticipation. The grunts are now coming from a different direction. Or maybe not! A zebra calls the alarm and then - quiet! The Maasai camp askaris appear out of the dark with reassuring smiles. After a while, one of your fellow guests raises his glass to propose a toast to another eventful day in the bush.  The conversation then turns to animal sightings and night sounds! This is an African safari at its best.

A few miles away at the lodge, it is standing room only at the bar. An English Premier League football game is on TV and there is a heated conversation between patrons of the opposing sides. Meanwhile the buffet lines are forming in the dining room.  A small group of kids are running through the lobby and gather inside the gift shop. A concerned mother calls out from the dining room and the kids reply loudly in unison. Night sounds of a different kind.

Senior clients should know that our tented camps are not lacking any modern-day conveniences. Flushing western-style porcelain toilets, hot en-suite showers, thick mattresses and fresh linen, wooden beds with headboards, twin washbasins, clothes hangers, chairs, bright lighting, and wait staff.

Tented camps always draw an interesting mix of people who are truly interested in Africa and wildlife. Most are traveling single or couples.  Since most camps only have 4-8 tents, it is easier to converse and make new friends.

The Kiliwarriors use the best available lodge or camp for your budget and interests, the time of year and predicted proximity of wildlife.

Vehicles

You will spend many hours and long days in your safari vehicle! For seniors, the vehicles must be especially comfortable!

bullet

Removable popup roofs to shelter you from the sun and the rain. Please don't underestimate the heat! It can be 35 degrees C  or 95 degrees F and warmer - potentially dangerous for seniors! Our pop up roofs help a lot! If 2008 we have newly designed safari vehicles -  more comfortable than ever before!

bullet

Soft seats - older clients are more prone to hemorrhoids and this can be especially uncomfortable on the bumpy roads. Constipation is common on safari due to changes in diet and this can cause flare ups. We offer extra soft cushions on request.

bullet

Inverters to charge your electronic devices. Few things are worse than flat camera batteries when a cheetah gets ready to hunt!

bullet

12V refrigeration to keep your drinks cool in the hot African sun. It is also useful if you have medicine that must be kept cool.

bullet

Air-conditioning - wonderful when you have to close the windows to avoid dust and tsetse flies. Air-conditioning can be a life-saver for seniors. The dust can be overbearing and shutting the windows can cause overheating.

bullet

Modified soft seat covers with carefully designed pockets to hold your water, film equipment, binoculars and snacks.

bullet

First-aid kit.

bullet

Porta-Potti™ toilets - Some older clients find it harder to use squatting techniques in the bush. We use Porta-potti toilets on Kilimanjaro and in our fly camping safaris. These flushing toilets are portable, very comfortable and the rotating Pour-Out Spout makes emptying easy and prevents spills. If you are worried about the bathroom situation while on a game drive, we can include a Porta-potti. When you stop for a break, the guide will place the potti either behind the vehicle or behind a bush to ensure your privacy.

bullet

We use only Land Cruiser and Land Rover vehicles -  customized for optimum game viewing.

If you are a senior planning a safari to East Africa, please contact us! We have a long history of excellence when caring for older clients on both Kilimanjaro and safari.
