It doesn’t
get any better than this…
Riding in a
comfortable vehicle winding down from the
Ngorongoro
Crater road and catching glimpses of the Serengeti Plains for the
first time and then finally there it is before you as far as the eye
can see, YOU ARE HERE! All the while Gilliard is narrating with his
dreamy Kiswahili accent about all we encounter; the Maasai herders,
culture morsels, the flora and fauna, the controlled burns, the
wildlife and the Cycle of Life in the
Serengeti!
PINCH! James Earl
Jones and IMAX great job but it is only a warm-up for the real thing!
Mobile
Fly-Camping, enjoying sundowners and the great company of Gilliard and
Solomon every evening around a fire, amazing and delicious meals made
and served by Solomon (the most cheerful person I have ever
come across) in a screened in dining cabana with the ambiance best
described as casually elegant. STARGAZING (no light pollution and not
room in the sky for one more star)! Stargazing during evening fireside
chats, stargazing from my open-air private shower and from my tent
while lying in my cozy cot draped in beautiful Maasai linens! I was
not only stargazing from my luxurious cocoon but I was listening to
the roar of lions off in the distance, the odd barking of Zebras
broken up by the sudden pounding of hundreds of hooves for short
sprints when they were startled by something, the voices of Gilliard
and Solomon jovially conversing in their melodic and percussive
Kiswahili language early in the morning while making preparations for
our day ahead. Enchanting…

The
KiliWarrior Team-Amazing!
KiliWarrior Safari-Highly Recommended! Five Lion Paws!
After a great deal
of research, much to my relief, I found what I was looking for when I
came across the KiliWarrior website and have been very well taken care
of since my first telephone conversation with Eben. I explained I
(solo female) would be in Africa for two weeks visiting with a friend
but I wanted to stay longer on my own since this was my first visit
and a lifelong dream. Eben reviewed my existing itinerary and from
that designed my trip of a lifetime by adding the Serengeti and Lake
Manyara safari. Eben even managed on short notice through his
connections in Uganda to secure a permit for me to
trek the mountain gorillas in the rainforest of the Virunga Mountains
in Rwanda! I was to see the Susa group and the Golden monkeys too!
Carol has been
most gracious answering and following up on my many questions. Carol
kept in contact with me while she and Eben were on Safari in Tanzania
and South Africa right up until I left on my own trip! Carol and Eben
both are still sharing their “inside” expertise with me on various
matters in regards to the students whose education I now sponsor
through the foundation the KiliWarriors support and for my return to
Africa to mountain bike in the
Ngorongoro Crater
highlands
and hopefully
climb Kili!
Wilbert Mollel was
great having everything organized and ready for my Safari from the
Tanzania side of things. He was in touch while I was in Tanzania
before I connected with the KiliWarriors, during my KiliWarrior Safari
and then I was pleased when Gilliard brought me to meet Wilbert, his
mother Victoria, lovely sister Anna and brothers Hosea, Aggrey and
Patrick. What an exquisite family and such a nice visit I had! Wilbert
still keeps in touch to see how I am doing and always passing along
greetings to my family!
Solomon Metili
prepared delicious meals and presented them beautifully. He ran a VERY
CLEAN kitchen which is not surprising since he owns a restaurant in
Arusha where much to my delight I was able to visit and was treated to
lunch! He also studies and knows much about wildlife and was quite fun
as he was always smiling and laughing! His friends nicknamed him
“Happy Mollel” (Mollel is his Clan, no relation to the KiliWarrior
Mollel’s) because he loves to chat and is so happy all the time. For
Sure!
Most importantly
the person I spent most of my time with….
Gilliard Mollel
(GILL-e-id the r is silent) is a truly gifted Safari Guide. His
knowledge of animal behavior, area history, culture and traditions,
flora and fauna, their medicinal uses (lose your toothbrush-no
problem, Gilliard has just the right branch for you to use) is much
more in-depth than all of his studies could ever cover. It is just an
intuitive part of who he is being of Maasai heritage and from growing
up in the Ngorongoro Crater highlands before moving to Arusha. I do
believe he knows every nook and cranny of the parks and has the eyes
of an Eagle for his spotting abilities are not to be believed! If the
wildlife is there, you will not miss seeing it with Gilliard. This
spotting ability is also critical for driving as there are dips and
bumps in the roads that I could not see with the naked eye even on top
of them where if you hit them wrong you could spend quite a bit of
your Safari time fixing a tire rim or waiting for a welder (lots of
welders in Africa). I was most appreciative of his driving prowess as
we did come across folks a few different times that were not as lucky
(I actually could be lulled to sleep on the roads but never wanted to
miss anything). Gilliard was very formal and professional as far as
safety and my overall comfort and wellbeing while quite flexible with
our schedule, is a great teacher, and a most enjoyable traveling
companion as I never felt like a tourist once; I was welcomed
immediately like an old family friend. With his big smile Gilliard
often would say
